Which version, which system?
How large is the file?
To what kind of object do you apply the blend mode?
When did you last restart the computer?

Please describe exactly the steps you’re doing to make a blend. You mentioned a progress png. Are you trying to create a blend within a png? You can only create blends as part of lllustrator vector objects. Also, please tell us what version of Illustrator and what OS you’re using.

It seems repeatable. This is on Mac OS Sierrra 10.12.6
First time it gave the Progress Box: Saving Data Recovery Information.
Canceled and crashed Illustrator.
The second time:

Strange. I can't reproduce that on 10.12.6 with Illustrator CC 2018

Just redownloaded the 22.0.2 version (the previous one was removed by an "update").
Blend options > Specified Distance > 4 px
Same system, same problem.

I'm beginning to get the impression that this is hardware-related.
My ancient hardware seems to be somewhat robust.
