Not enough Ram [OSX 10.13.2]

I have experienced no problems previously with the newest version of PS until yesterday when it started sending pop-up messages saying it could not complete a task (filter-pixelate-crystalize) because I didn't have enough RAM.  The program also is beginning to lock up for no apparent reason and no error codes.  I have to force a shutdown.  My computer has 16GB of RAM which should be enough for almost any task I want to do.  I use PS strictly for photo editing and all photos are kept on external drives.  After my third try using the filter I noticed that my HD storage showed only 5GB left.  Shutting down the computer and restarting brought it back to normal at 130GB.  I am currently running the computer in safe mode to see if that helps and it doesn't.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  A copy of system info is below.

Thanks, Susan

With large image and filters may need to use more resources.  You Preferences performance is set to allow  Photoshop use up the 68% of your system RAM  try changing that setting to 80% and restart Photoshop.  See if you can use that filter on your document.

You also seem to have duplicate plug-in installed and disabled you should correct that. I do not use a mac so I can not tell you how to do that....

Thanks for taking the time to help out.  I increased performance as you suggested but it didn't help.  As far as the duplicate plug-ins go, I can't find them so I am unable to delete them.

I attempted to save the photo I was working on so I wouldn't have to keep duplicating the steps I took to get to the RAM error message and it would not allow me to save my work as the file was greater than 2 gb.

I do not know what the image format file limmits are in Apple's unix file system. To save image file over 2GB size using windows one must use  Tiff or or PSB files over 4GB only PSB can be used.  How big is your image and how many layers do you have?

The image I was working with was a jpeg file and 16.7MB in size.  I added four layers.  Saving it with 2 layers (which the computer let me do) it was 1.3GB.  I was able to save it as a TIFF and it is 2.46GB.

Saving it is a help as it saves me time when trying different things to get the filters to work but it sure doesn't help with the original problem.  Something is going on that is strange and I can't find any problems similar to this in recent history in the forums.  There have been problems reported when available RAM was just 4GB.

Thanks again JJ for trying to help me sort this out.

An update on the RAM business.  It is still happening but only when I try and use the crystalize filter and then only in certain instances.  I uninstalled then reinstalled PS and it still locks up.  The process I am trying to duplicate is the one written by Steve Patterson on how to add falling snow with PS CC 2018.  I actually got it to work as advertised once but have not been able to do so since.  I have noticed that the efficiency indicator starts at 100% then drops to 70 or so then back up to 100% (it will drop from 100 to 70 or lower and then back up several times over the course of a project) and finally hit 0%.  At that point I have to shut everything down.  PS seems to be using 14GB of RAM.  How is that possible?  Any help please.

I noticed that my HD storage showed only 5GB left.  Shutting down the computer and restarting brought it back to normal at 130GB.

Photoshop uses a lot of RAM, but a lot more disk space. (scratch disk)

So the problem is probably that you are running out of disk space, and you need to clear out some space on your hard drive, for instance by moving files to an external drive.

You set up scratch disks under Preferences > Scratch disks, and you can assign several disks for this purpose.

More about scratch disk here: Optimize performance Photoshop CC

I have 150GB of space on my HD after re-arranging a few things and dumping others.  I am using my HD as my primary scratch disk and have done for years.  My secondary scratch disk is an external HD and has 2 TB with 1 1/2 TB available.  I have tried running the program with both and neither works.  The program worked perfectly until three days ago so something new is happening but I can't seem to discover if it is with photoshop or my Mac.  Apple has been working with me all day to see if we can figure out if it is on their end.  I have already tried all the steps I could find about optimizing performance but none of them made any difference.  Is it possible that there is a problem with that particular filter?  I don't have to use it but if there is a problem with one there could easily be a problem with others.

Thanks again, Susan

Susan I use Windows not a Mac.  On a windows system Photoshop will fill its first scratch disk before using it second scratch disk.  If the first scratch disk is also Windows boot disk by the time Photoshop fill it Windows will not be running well.  Windows needs free space on its boot disk for  paging, temp space and Application user space.    Photoshop may never use  start using the second scratch disk for before then you will most likely reboot or kill Photoshop for windows will be performing so poorly.    I have never use OSX older Apple OS were very poor I used OS7 and OS9 but choose to use windows instead.  Old windows version  were also very poor till Microsoft started to use NT as its base  system.  Later when Steve start to work for Apple again he abandoned Apples OS and switch to a Unix base system like he use at Nextstep and also switch from the IBM PowerPC processor to Intel processors..   If I were you I would try configuring your OSX boot disk as Photoshop second scratch disk to see it things works better.  ON Windows I have seen Photoshop use well over 100GB of scratch space.

I beleive CC 2018 also had a bug the ate scratch space filling up disk.

Another update.  Spent all day on the phone with Apple techs (by the way, the service was excellent.)  It was determined that the computer was fine but the problem most probably lies with PS or maybe my external HD.  They eventually had me pull three photos, one from the computer, one from each of two external HDs.  I put them on my desktop, opened all three at once in PS, ran all three through the program I was trying to use, one photo after another with all three open.  Worked perfectly.  Not sure where to go from here but they still think it may be PS related or perhaps a problem with my external hard drives.  My next step may be to transfer all photos to an new external HD and repair the old one.  What a chore that will be.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Susan.

Had the same problem, Didn't know what to do, changed ram to 100%, but it didn't work. I went back in and opened up preferences > performance and changed the gpu settings to basic and was able to save the file. Probably not a long term solution, but I didn't lose any of my work.

Never set RAM usage to 100%! Other applications and processes need memory too. Even Photoshop plugins run outside Photoshop's address space and need their own RAM.

Around 70% is normally pretty optimal. If you have a lot of RAM, 32 GB and up, you can push that to 80 or so. But never 100!

Most likely you're running out of scratch disk space. Most people severely underestimate the free disk space needed for the scratch disk. 100 GB should be considered absolute minimum for most normal use. 500 GB or more if you're working with big files.
