    keywords not migrated

    Bluesy1905 Level 1

I am using Lightroom for years, my latest version was 5. By the end of last year I changed to the all new Lightroom CC 2018. I migrated a catalog containing 16.000 pictures. Everything works fine, but soon I realized, that there were no keywords shown. I did not bother, because I trust in Adobe. And I had other things to do than to organize my pictures. Somewhere I would find them. I thought it was just a matter of understanding the concept.

Now I have to say, that all my keywords are definitely gone. I have no idea, what Lightroom did to them.

Is there anything I can do? It is 16.000 pictures. To lose the keywords would really a nasty thing.

What about these IPTC-Keywords? Where are they?

      thanks

      Stefan

Which version did you migrate from? Normally LR6 is required as a minimum, or a previous catalog which has been upgraded to Lr Classic.

Did you get any error messages during migration?

I had the catalog imported to the latest version of Lightroom Classic CC (test-version). From there to Lightroom CC.

            No error messages. Nothing.

If the catalog upgrade to Classic was successful then the keywords should have transferred together with special keywords for color labels (if used) so I’m not sure what happened.

Are you seeing nothing if you select a single photo in detail view (press D from grid view) and then click the keyword icon - bottom right?

No, I see nothing when I open the keywords. The list is empty.

OK, then you need to clarify how you did the migration into LRCC. Did you use LRCC's "catalog migration" tool, or did you just sync all the images from LR Classic, or did you add (import) you photos into LRCC?

If you used the catalog migration tool then any existing keywords in the Classic catalog should have been included in that migration, but using the other methods it rather depends on various other factors. So let's get the method clarified and we can work from there.

I have to apologize. Now I see all keywords! They are all there, if I look at the old Fotos! What is irritating to me is that I do not see the list of keywords. I have to learn that Lightroom CC is not like Lightroom classic. Thanks!

How would I get a list that suggests the keywords? As it comes in Lightroom classic.

There is no list because LR CC also uses AI based on machine learning. You simply select All Photos and type a search term. Even one you never entered yourself. Try “boats” or “trees” or "red" or "blue"

Thank you for your help, it is very much appreciated. Why isn't there a list of tags that I use? I am German, so my tags are in German language. If I search for "Familie" I do not want to tag it with "family". How is this supposed to work?

Searching for your own keywords will work. AI comes on top of that.

Yes, I can search for my keywords. I just learned that. But when I have a new foto I do not see a list of my keywords to tag the new foto. Why is this?

I must admit that I still did not find any secondary literature on Lightroom CC 2018 to learn from in GERMAN. And whenever I find something and I have a close look it is dealing with Lightroom classic (which was called Lightroom CC before). This is sort of not ideal.

Yes I think the learning material is still fairly limited but LrCC is a version 1 product and as it develops I would expect the literature to follow. See of this link is of help:

Thanks for your information, again. I will check the link, but the lessons from Adobe did not help once, up to now. They give very basic information. But I trust in things getting better every day.

I have this issue as well. I cannot find a Keyword List, ie a list of previously used Keywords. I am just loading 5000 photos taken in The Gambia, mostly of birds. If I search for BIRDS then almost every photo will come up. I am attaching keywords to each photo, but almost every photo I have to type in Birds and Gambia. Also once I have identified a bird and attached keywords, for example Gambia,Birds,Waders,Plovers,Spur-winged Plover, then when I get to the next photo of the same bird I need to go to a Keywords List to find the Keywords that I have already used. Otherwise I have to type all the keywords in again. If all the birds are all in the same place, then it is easy to highlight and attach the same keywords, but often they are found on different days or different cards, so that is not possible.

I had this facility in Lightroom Classic, but cannot find it in Lightroom CC

The Keyword functionality in LRCC is currently limited in comparison to LR Classic. Whether is is developed further to be something similar to Classic, or more attention paid to interfacing their AI search function with Keywords, only Adobe can say.  But they don't normally comment on future product specifics.

Thanks for that Jim. I like the new LR, but this is costing me a great deal of work and time and there will be others in the same position who take specialist photos and need to classify them specifically and need a speedier way of doing so. Hopefully Adobe will take note of this issue and reinstate a Keyword List or similar.

Thanks, Jim. For admitting that the keyword functionality in LRCC is very limited. I am not happy with it at all. How would any AI search function know the name oaf my son or my daughter? Very strange. I still trust that Adobe will find a better solution.
