Make a wish.

There's only one 'best' way to do it. Open the page and copy/paste content
to a newly spawned template page. When finished, save the new page over the
old one.

2. Re: Apply template to multiple htm files
port4u May 15, 2008 11:52 AM (in response to Newsgroup_User)I do not understand the reply to my post. I have a working template. I have slide pages in html format that need formatting to fit my site. I need to apply the template to the slide pages (merge the two). Applying the template I have now to the slide pages works one at a time. What I don't find in Dreamweaver is the ability to apply my working template to about 200 (with more to come) slide pages created by an external piece of software. -

I do not understand Murray's reply that says you cannot apply the template to multiple files. If all the files are managed in Dreamweaver, it's quite straight-forward. In brief, here is a situation that I use regularly:
- Assumed: Site has dozens of html pages, many of which use the a given template.
- I make a change to that template. For example, add a menu item to the navigation.
- When I save the template, DW asks me if I want to apply the updated template to all of the pages that use that template. I say yes, and let DW check out all the pages, and apply the updated template to each affected file. (Take care to make sure you have the latest files locally! I stepped over a revision on the server and 2 users lost their updates due to my error.)
- When done, in the file browser, I right-click and choose Select -> Checked out files, then select Check In.
Using this method, I have applied a template update to ~40 pages in ~3 minutes, and I only touched one file manually.
If I have missed something regarding this method, please correct me; I am still learning.
Best regards, -

The original question was about how to apply a template to existing pages
that are NOT child pages of that template.
There is no bulk way to do that.
It is possible to use find and replace to apply a template to existing
non-templated pages in a couple of find and replace steps, but usually it's
only possible to make the entire body area one single editable area which
takes all the possibles of using a template away.

Actually not. I often build pages like this when I want the convenience of
templates, but my site is using section-specific layouts. I can still use a
single template for the site, even though I have such layout differences.
