Try troubleshooting steps suggested below:
1- Check if Acrobat is updated to the latest patch - click check for updates under Help menu. You may also download updates manually using this link: Adobe software and product updates
2- If that doesn't work, reset preferences for Acrobat using the steps here: How to reset Acrobat Preference settings to default.
Could you let us know Acrobat version installed on the machine: Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC
Does Acrobat stops responding when you work on a specific pdf file or with all the pdf files? Also, Is there any error message you are getting when Acrobat hangs?
I am constantly having this problem on my iMac as well. I've tried multiple restarts and I tried resetting the Acrobat Preferences to default. Any other ideas to relieve this frustration?

I have the same problems: it has been persistent in at least the 2 latest updates of High Sierra. Currently on 10.13.3. Occurs in both Acrobat DC and Reader. I have deinstalled and reinstalled using bot the uninstaller and CleanMyMac. I have thrown out preferences etc. To no avail: app opens, but when I try opening a document it freezes (spinning ball) and I have to force quit. The same happens whether I try opening a doc on my disc or via a link on the net. Acrobat is at version 18.011.20038
