unable to open 'photoshop image 13'

Hello!

All of a sudden today i have a PSD file that won't open in photoshop, and in indesign it just appears black. it is a .psd file, but when i look at the file properties it says it is a "photoshop image 13" file. I am running PSD CS6, and my preferences are all normal, and i have reset them.

How can i open this file? and prevent this from happening again??

What exactly happens in Photoshop When you try to open?

"could not complete your request beacsue the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop"

which doesnt really make sense since it was saved as a .psd from this photoshop
