    Cell borders of a table show up browsing on iPhone

    brightbelt Level 1
      Hi,
      I'm on DW CS3 on an intel iMac. For some reason, cell borders are showing up on the Safari broswer on my iPhone when I browse my website.

      I've checked 2 different (real) computers and the Firefox and Safari Browsers on both computers and no cell borders show up. And in DW CS3 where my web resides, the cell borders are dotted, indicating a "0" border setting (with the cells at least).

      The page in question is:

      Frank Bright Regular Site

      Many Thanks for any illumination. I realize I may have to post this on the iPhone forum instead, depending upon what the problem is. I thought I'd try here first. Many Thanks,
      Frank B.

          A valid doctype would be a good starting point.
          Did you use DW to build this page? Seems the code has become a little messy,
          thats all. Try fixing the validation errors and see if it helps.

            The page is pretty messy. I suggest you consider adding a doctype to the
            page (HTML4.01 Transitional) so that at least it will be rendered in
            standards and not quirks mode. Then take care of the 11 errors that will
            remain.

            Your massively redundant and twisted CSS is a bit difficult to wade through,
            but if I had to guess why this is happening it would be because one of the
            several .FBtable rules is being expressed in the iPhone -

            .FBtable {
            border: thin solid #000066;
            }

            Try adding another style to this rule -

            .FBtable {
            border: thin solid #000066;
            border-collapse:collapse;
            }

            If that doesn't do it then I'll bet it's the really fragile table markup
            that is allowing the page background color to shine through gaps introduced
            between cells due to the large amount of spans present. To read about what
            I mean, go here -

              Many Thanks Brendon,
              I did get a valid doctype set into place, but the cell borders still show up on the iPhone version of the website.

              So you know, I imported this site from Frontpage 2003 about a year ago and I never had this problem until now.

              I've tested this page today by browsing on IE 7 in Vista (laptop), Firefox in Linux, and Firefox and Safari on my iMac. And NONE show any cell borders; it ONLY occurs on the iPhone when I browse with Safari.

              Could this be an iPhone bug by any chance? Of course, I certainly don't rule out that my code is a bit messy as you've said.

              Many Thanks for helping - I'm open to more ideas,....Frank B.

                Hi Murray,
                Many Thanks, Murray, yes, it's quite a mess I know. I don't know CSS too well, and when I got stuck trying to make a change that wouldn't apply, I guess the styles started adding up upon one another.

                How would you suggest I clean it up so to speak? Or what could I do to start things from scratch on the CSS part of things?

                I know I could delete all external style pages and set all the tables to "none" in terms of styles.

                I did try both your Doc type suggestion and added the border-collapse to the FBtables - neither fixed this problem.....

                I'm open to more ideas. Many Thanks for following up here,
                Frank B.
