LR will not start after new update

I have a problem that is similar to that of a Mac user who posted an earlier question. In fact, I posted this earlier in reply to his question. Since he apparently got an answer that solved the problem for him, I am re-posting my problem as a new question so that it is not overlooked.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. LR was running fine until I did the update yesterday. Now it will not open at all. I keep getting that darn screen telling me it crashed and asks me to send a report to Adobe. I have spent the entire day trying to get this fixed to no avail. I really don't want to uninstall LR and reinstall and then probably have to restore my catalogue from a backup and reinstall all of my presets from LR on my laptop. Incidentally, I have not had this problem with my laptop running Windows 10. On the laptop the update installed correctly and LR is working. The problem is on my main desktop computer. I'm wasting time and money here. I hope someone can help. RWW

Perhaps there's an incompatibility with your graphic card or the graphic driver.

Do you have installed the lastest version of the graphic driver?

Is your system up-to-date?

Try to deactive the GPU support: Adobe Lightroom GPU Troubleshooting and FAQ

In your case when LR don't start you have done the deactivation manually in preference file.

Thanks for your reply. I will check the driver on my graphics card but I believe that it and my system are up to date. I’m pretty good at maintenance but I might have let something slip. As for disabling the graphics processor, I had done that already on all my previous versions of LR. I would check again but LR will not open at all for me to check that it is still turned off. Any ideas? Again, thanks for your help and I will write again when I have the chance to check it out again. RWW

I pointed this out in my previous answer (see the screenshot). You have to check manually the preference file.

You'll find this already in rthe linked document under "Solutuion 2".

Sorry I missed the way to check/change the gpu setting. I’ve been rather frustrated. I just manually checked and it is turned off as I suspected and I updated the graphics card drivers, too, but still nothing. What now? Thanks again for your patience and help. RWW

Where do you have problems? Do you have followed the steps in the linked document under the point "Solution 2"?

The name of the .agprefs file is depending on the installed Lightroom version. Which version of LR do you have installed?

Lightroom 6 -> Lightroom 6 Preferences.agprefs

Lightroom Classic CC-> Lightroom Classic CC 7 Preferences.agprefs

If the line useAutobahn=... doesn't exists you can add it to the file.

LR will not start at all, no splash screen, no nothing. Every time I try to start it an Adobe Crash Report Screen pops up and asks me to send a crash report. I have checked the gpu settings as you indicated and it is off. I have updated my graphics card driver too but still nothing but the crash report screen. Here is the report that has gone to Adobe. As you can see, the report cites almost entirely dll files:

As far as I see in the report you're running version 7.1,. This isn't the actual version of Lightroom. Please update to version 7.2 and check.

Dear Mr. Matt:

I want to thank you for your patience and your willingness to try to help me resolve my problem with the new update to Lightroom CC not starting after I had installed it. Just for your information in helping others in the future, I had been running LR CC 7.0 or 7.1, whichever had immediately preceded 7.2, without any difficulties until I installed the 7.2 version. That is when my problem began. However, I am very happy to report that this afternoon I uninstalled the problematic LR CC installation and reinstalled 7.2 again, and this time LR started up immediately with the correct catalogue and all of my presets present and accounted for. Again, thank you very much for your time and help. I really appreciate it.

Yours,

RWW
