Could you please take a look at this discussion Preview generation performance in LightRoom | Photoshop Family Customer Community and let us know if that helps in explaining how the preview generation works in Lightroom?

'Preview Generation Settings' is only available in Lr 7.0 and higher.
When 'Preview Generation Settings' is set to On (checked) the application will use the latest parallel processing algorithms to speed up preview building during import or when building previews for multiple files. However, during Lr 7.0 development it was found that some older hardware performed better when parallel was Off (unchecked). The recommendation is that you leave it On unless you find preview building is faster with it Off.
No, I had looked at this before. Just need to know what this does and whether I should check this. LR is very slow and I have to wait to see what I am doing when i make a change.
Thank you for this. I'll give this a try
