Is there a script or plugin or something that would allow me to delete all the connecting line segments while leaving the anchor points intact, without having to use the direct select to manually highlight each line segment and delete it?

Do you need a script? you can do this manually without selecting each line segment.

simply select one or all or your paths with either the Black or White arrows, then go to Select->Object->Direction Handles then hit Delete key on your keyboard
