Adobe Acrobat DC 2015 keeps opening windows instead of tabs

My colleague opens documents in adobe and they just open new windows instead.

Can this be turned into tab view?

It does not have the standard "open documents as new tabs in the same window" option under general preferences.

You have the "perpetual license" version of Adobe Acrobat, not the subscription version - or the 2017 version. This is a new feature that is not available in your version of Acrobat.
