Is there a way to cancel or ignore a web service result?

I have an application that uses web services for data retrieval. I found when users click a link that fetches data from a web service and while waiting for the results the user navigates to another page which retrieve other data, the browser will get bogged down waiting for both results. If the user navigates to a third location and tries to fetch yet another set of data it will lock up the browser for 20 - 30 seconds.

I am not returning large volumes of data but I'm wondering if there is a way to cancel a web service call if the user navigates away from the current page without waiting for the data? Or is there a way to tell the application to disregard the results?

I am using Cairngorm for the infrastructure of my application.

      Any thoughts?
