Can I just buy the program and use it like the good old days? Or is everything a like AE and CS6 a money vacuum?
(Bonus question, is this where EA got their idea for sucking up peoples money?)
Nope. If you want a recent version of AE, you have to rent.
Otherwise, it's eBay, older AE versions and five-year-old operating systems.
Not sure who came up with the "rent our software" model. Maybe Microsoft.

It's as old as software itself. If you wanted to do anything complicated in the 60s, you paid for time-share on IBM mainframes.
There will always be people who prefer subscription pricing, and people who hate it - in equal measure - but the majority don't much care either way provided it works. Adobe doesn't have the resources to create parallel versions of every program, and it has chosen to go with subscription. That's affected how the entire company operates, so it's not going to change anytime soon.

Two points: you're saying Adobe software works as billed? You're some Pollyanna!
But you're right that it has affected how the company operates. There's no good incentive to fix problems with the software, but a very great incentive to develop new features to attract new renters. Growth, y'know.

No; I'm saying that if it did work, people wouldn't complain as much.
