If you want a rectangle, use the Crop tool (diagonally next to the Pointer tool): select just the area you want (adjustable) and press the Enter key. Then, copy the result to your other image. (Make sure you don't save the cropped version over your original.)
If you want a different shape, you can make an alpha mask to make parts of your image transparent (grayscale, value determines opacity). Or, you can make a shape and map your image onto it.
There really are quite a few options. A few posters here have tutorials on their home sites. Read some of the other threads and look for tutorial links.
