if anyone reads the problem and doesn't understand what I mean please tell me, perhaps it's not explained clearly enought :-s
This FB 3 help topic seems to indicate that you cannot use CSS for chart styleable chart properties using compound values, such as strokes and gradient fills. Don't know if this extends to Flex in general.

You can use CSS for fills etc, the developer guide has a fair amount of info on that, as does the Flex 3: Training from the source book.
I use CSS for my charts, but I also do some programmatic stuff, by pulling out CSS values from style declarations and using these values when programmatically constructing stroke objects etc. For example, the code below is what I do to create a line series based on a CSS declaration I have:
