You need to spend some time looking up insert, insert vs. over-write, and 3 and 4 point editing. Those are very basic skills but a bit long to explain here. The Adobe help files and tutorials have info on that, and lynda.com has several excellent basic editing tutorials for PrPro that cover this very well.
A couple hours going through the base editing stuff on something like lynda.com could save you many hours of slow working.

To expand Neil help, which may be this:
And in the same appointment:
- To insert a clip and not move clips on other tracks, hold down Ctrl and Alt (Windows) or Command-Option-drag (Mac OS) the clip on the track.
It works for me just by pressing Alt, to add, what you are going to change depends on how you have illuminated the option Insert or Overwrite, the first column of the timeline.
The start of the clip can be configured in the source monitor, with clipping.
