Disable Collision on hidden object?

I have a character with a set of different arm poses in a swapset. In one of the poses she's holding an umbrella with collision enabaled on it, so a rain particle behavior can bounce off of it.  But is looks like the umbrella collision is present even when that layer is turned off by the swap set.

Is this the normal way Character Animator works?

Is there some way to turn off collision with a trigger or make a control that turns the collision on or off (either on the umbrella or the particles)?

Using v1.5 (Build 138) on MacOS 10.13.6

There is a "When Triggered" option in the collision setting. That might work for you, depending on how you set the triggers.

Another, maybe easier, approach might be to try putting the physics behavior at a lower hierarchy in the rigging. Here is a scene that has a similar requirement. The brick walls are the swap set. The blue wall has the collide and dynamic tags and the physics behavior. The red wall doesn't. The car and driver are in a separate group, with its own physics behavior.

So Jerry are you saying something like putting the "collision" tag within a nested independent group might restrict it better? Make the umbrella independent and tag that?

My low tech solution I used once - clone the puppet and set collide on the clone (not the original). Hey! I said it was low tech! 😉
