Premiere Pro CC 12.1.2 crashes when i press play on a clip

Crashes constantly, started by simply being slow while I was moving the playhead but now crashes constantly so it is essentially non-functional and I can't work 😞

I am using a 2017 Macbook Pro with 8gb RAM. Was going fine all day yesterday when I bought and installed the software, no idea why this has suddenly started.

Have tried clearing the media cache, importing into a new project, changing the playback, etc etc to no avail.
