Hey fairy , most of the stuff here , the butterflies and fluide shapes were probably created with brushes in ps2, but in fireworks we can use vectors. Drawing these vectors, require much time, especially for the butterflies and swans. Then to create the transparent effect , the objects opacity level on each layer were reduced , ( if some of the objects overlapped , they were also punched ). These shapes were probably replicated in some areas, an so forth

---- As for the curvy lines , a simple circle could achieve a similar effect using the reshape area tool ( and you can add more shapes around it ). http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/32599128/ << view this work for example. You could also draw them using the pen tool if you want. Or you could also use fonts for these , take for example a script font . Take a look at this > http://www.deviantart.com/view/29003638/ <<< on the top part where you see the two yellow glowing circles, you can easily spot that a script font was used ( I think I used letters , G , H , and S mostly )

---- In fireworks 8 , you can use convert marquee to paths, and select a picture you choose and convert it to paths.

You might also be able to find the various shapes you want through some
online free resources, such as Microsoft Clip Art. I found 34 pages of
butterflies by doing a quick search
