Did they also change the way their grid looks like or is this a setting in the program?

This is a known issue on MacOS. Hopeful that a fix will be forthcoming. Looks like Proportional Grid is what you should be using, for now. AE's Preferences Window allows for customization based on the number of rectangles you want in your Proportional Grid.
