Once you change one to something different than what it is configured for, the next one you insert should keep the settings. Notice that I said "should". I say this because sometimes it seems to work and sometimes it doesn't. I've been working on some projects lately where once I change it, it doesn't seem to remember what I changed it to. This means the next one I insert I have to change. And the one after that...
The only way it seems to work reliably is if I copy one and paste into a different slide.

Ditto here. Never works. You have to recreate the highlight every time you use it. Very annoying especially since the default highlight sucks for what we are using it for. What a waste of extra keystrokes.
It makes no sense you can't change this system wide and retain the settings. If not global, a least provide this option for a project.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Please take a moment to report the issue to Adobe. You do this via the Wish Form. The thing is, Community Experts can tell Adobe something until we are blue in the face. But unless they also hear it from the masses, it isn't likely to be changed or corrected.
