Corey@Adobe Jan 12, 2009 10:03 AM (in response to DavidSalahi)Hello DLSalahi,
Please post the URL for the site you're trying to register, along with the full error message you're receiving. When exactly in the registration process do you receive the error?
It sounds like your host directory doesn't match the host directory on your server - or might simply be misspelled. The host directory in the Configure Website dialog box should be the same host directory that you specified in the Dreamweaver Site Settings dialog box.

2. Re: Unable to Register a Site
DavidSalahi Jan 12, 2009 10:34 AM (in response to Corey@Adobe)I'm getting the error from the "Register Website" dialog after I've entered all the info and pressed the "Test" button. Here is the full text of the error (considering that the ICE app is done in Flash and I cannot copy/paste, it would sure be nice if I could just upload a bitmap of the error message instead of having to type in the entire thing):
Configure Website Error
An FTP error occurred. Cannot write to the specified Host Directory.
The connection to your FTP server was successful (Host Name, Username and Password are correct).
However, a test file could not be copied in the Host Directory.
The specified username may not have sufficient permissions to access the folder and/or its content.
_________________________________________________________________________________
I have no permission problems uploading from Dreamweaver.
The directory structure for this site is a bit confusing. In DW's File Panel, Remote View, the root directory is shown as www/www. However, I have NO directory specified in the Remote Info dialog box. I am able to Put files from DW and I can then access them from a browser as expected. Similarly, when I connect with CuteFTP I immediately enter at a directory level www/www. In CuteFTP I can navigate up two levels where other directories are shown. However, uploading in CuteFTP to the www/www directory works to put files onto the site, just as it does in DW.
Initially, I specified NO host directory in the ICE form -- which matches my Dreamweaver Remote Info dialog. When that didn't work I tried a couple of other things. First, I tried setting the Host Directory to www and, when that didn't work, I tried setting it to www/www. Neither of those worked.
I've tried this all multiple times and cannot find any way to work around it. I have no problem accessing the site in DW or in CuteFTP, only in ICE.
Suggestions?

Thanks for your patience. Please try unchecking the “Use passive FTP” checkbox in the Configure Website dialog and make another test (or check it if it’s unchecked and make another test).
Please let me know the results.

7. Re: Unable to Register a Site
DavidSalahi Feb 11, 2009 12:10 PM (in response to Corey@Adobe)I had tried it both ways before but I tried it again just now to make sure. But, first I had to deal with the annoying message:
Testing connection settings has been disabled for 5 minutes due to too many failed attempts.
This was my first attempt in several weeks and all of those prior failed attempts are due to the InContext Editing software's failure, not mine, so it seems odd to penalize the poor user. I'm now getting this message each time I try to test so it would be helpful if you could reset this behavior.
But having done my penance I tried it again both ways. Still, no help.
Again, the error message is saying that it was able to log in but was unable to copy a file to the host. And, to reiterate, this site has a somewhat unconventional directory structure. When I log in with ftp, I see that I'm in the following directory:
www/www
This is where the home page, index.php, is located. Perhaps this directory structure has something to do with the problem.

Wylie Design Studio Feb 14, 2009 8:56 AM (in response to DavidSalahi)I have also been getting the same error message:

However, a test file could not be copied in the Host Directory.

I am trying to set up InContext Editing for www.wyliedesignstudio.com. I have had the domain with the same hosting for years, and have never had a problem with permissions. I am the only ftp user set up on the account, and have had full read/write permission from Dreamweaver, GoLive, Coffee Cup, and other ftp applications. My directory set-up is about as standard as it gets, and I've already successfully set up two other websites (hosted with the same company) with InContext Editing. I've also tried setting it up with passive mode and without. I've tried using IE and Firefox. I've tried logging in from the site itself, and from the InContext Editing control panel.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Corey@Adobe Feb 16, 2009 4:49 PM (in response to Wylie Design Studio)Hello Kirsten,
Is there anything different between the FTP, directory, or site settings between the sites you setup previously, and this one that's giving you the registration error? Any differences could be a clue as to what is causing the problem.

Wylie Design Studio Feb 17, 2009 8:08 PM (in response to Corey@Adobe)Hi Corey,
Both sites are hosted through GoDaddy.com.As far as I know, FTP and directory settings should be the same. I don't know if these settings would make a difference, but this is for the site that worked for InContext Editing (www.cpchurch.com):
Operating System: Linux
Hosting Type: Shared Hosting
Hosting Configuration: 2.0
PHP Version: PHP 4.x
Available Bandwidth Allotment: 3,000,000 MB
Disk Space Allotment: 300,000 MB
These are the settings for www.wyliedesignstudio.com, which is not working with InContext Editing:
Operating System:Windows
Hosting Type:Shared Hosting
.Net Runtime Version:ASP.Net 1.1
IIS Version:IIS 6.0
Bandwidth Allotment:1,500,000 MB
Disk Space Allotment:150,000 MB
Does that help at all? I'm not sure if any of these settings would affect the programming. -

DannyOrlando222 Feb 22, 2009 5:05 PM (in response to DavidSalahi)By Golly I've got it! Someone else set me up with an FTP account and even though I could leave the host directory field blank in Dreamweaver it would not work in ICE. I was getting the same "test file could not be copied in the host dir" error. So after about a hundred failed attempts I tried entering the username for the FTP account that was setup for me in the host directory field and whadddya know it works now. Hopefully this will help someone else out there. -

Corey@Adobe Feb 24, 2009 8:40 AM (in response to DaveCon)Hello David,
I sent you a private message as well. I was able to register and configure your site without any problems in my own InContext Editing account, so you should be able to as well. I had to have Use Passive FTP checked, and the directory had to be specified as:
/www/www/
note the slashes at both the beginning and end.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue for you.
Best regards,

It finally let me back on after too many failed attempts to guess what settings to use. I tried the above settings, and that did not work either. On another site hosted by the same company, I just left the Host Directory field blank, and was able to connect without any problems, so I doubt if that is the problem I've been running into with wyliedesignstudio.com. Although I could be wrong. -

PaulFish Apr 6, 2009 6:21 PM (in response to DavidSalahi)I am getting the same error message when I try to register. My password, domain, and username are all fine, but the directory is wrong. I have tried registering using a blank for the directory (which works when publishing from Dreamweaver CS4), "/." which is what my webhosting service suggested, and "/./" which did not work either.
My webhosting service is 1and1.com.
Can anyone suggest another directory for me to put in that field?
Thanks,

Yes, I have tried several times (I think I'm somewhere near the 30 attempts range now). I have tried with the Passive FTP box both checked and unchecked.
I have contacted my web hosting provider (1and1.com), and I have asked them if I should try a different destination directory. I am hoping to get a reply from them soon.
Thanks for trying.

Corey@Adobe Apr 8, 2009 3:27 PM (in response to ruairi77)Hello Ruairi,
I notice that you have renamed you includes folder to Includes (capital I).
<script src="Includes/ice/ice.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
Try renaming your includes folder to all-lowercase, and change your links to reflect this, or create a separate folder for the InContext Editing include files in an all-lowercase includes folder. Please let me know if this resolves the problem for you.
Best regards,
Corey

PaulFish Apr 8, 2009 3:29 PM (in response to Corey@Adobe)My host provider (1and1.com) gave me a different directory to try to register with and it worked. It turned out to be "/(username)", which is a different directory than the one I usually "put" my files to when publishing.
Registration is now done. Thanks for your help.

Tommy Logic Jun 5, 2009 9:04 AM (in response to Silvy_gsbk)Silvy,
I noticed you are putting the test site in a sub-folder... please see this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1981469#1981469
Although, looking over the code for the link you provided { http://www.schule.suedtirol.it/gs-bk/ } ...there doesn't appear to be any reference to it being set up for InContext Editing whatsoever.
There should be references to:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en" xmlns:ice="http://ns.adobe.com/incontextediting">
and a link to the includes file called ice.js
<script src="http://www.schule.suedtirol.it/includes/ice/ice.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
I don't see that in your code at the moment... Did you set it up initially through DW4?

Kristen,
Looking over your code on the page link that you provided, I don't see any reference that the page was set up for InContext Editing.
I see that you have the includes file on your additional pages, but no reference to any editable regions.
Also, it appears that this site was created with GoLive, not DW4. The head should ave a line that reads:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:ice="http://ns.adobe.com/incontextediting">
yours only reads:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
