My computer has had a problem with certain Premiere updates several times in the past. Normally I can run Premiere perfectly but occasionally an update will make my computer unable to load Premiere. In this instance, nothing I do shows up on my timeline until I attempt something else, and often the play-head is invisible, making editing near impossible. When updates have prevented me from editing in the past I've had to wait until the next update before I can resume my editing, however this is a slow option. I've tried editing my project on an older version of Premiere but because it's saved as a new file, I haven't been able to. Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

Try resetting the preferences:
FAQ: How to reset preferences in Premiere Pro?
If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
- Do one of the following:
- Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
- Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.
from here:

If that doesn’t work ,try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site.

One thing you can (and should) do is test out updates and new versions on a second system before you update your edit rig.
