    Shockwave counter

    Level 7
I need a way to keep track of how many individual people view a
particular Director Shockwave file. Is it possible to code a Director
Shockwave file that will play on the internet to look at a user's
computer, and then send information like the their IP address to an
      online database?

      Thanks

          Hi,

I'd suggest a non-Director approach. You can sign up with a place like:
          http://www.statcounter.com/
Once you register, you get a bit of JavaScript code to put into the htm
page. With this simple addition, it sends info to statcounter with every
visitor page load. Statcounter will keep track of the site traffic to your
site including number of unique visitors (based on IP address), number of
page hits, where people came from, what browser they use.

Statcounter is free for a limited use. Google offers something similar for
          free:
          http://www.google.com.au/analytics/
With Google, you need to put the JavaScript in the home page of the site
          for it to activate.

Of course, you could build visitor tracking into the Shockwave, but I say
why do something hard when there's an easy alternative.

          regards

Thanks for the info, Dean. I'll definitely check those sites out, but
I'd really like to know how to do it as a built-into-shockwave thing
also. Any ideas where I might find such code?

              Hi,

I looked at finding the IP address from within Director file a little
while back but did not end up needing it. Here's what I found:

For local IP , you could parse the output of ipconfig on windows with a
              projector using the shell xtra.

I think there's a method you can call in the SMUS xtra that'll give you
the IP address (what I heard, no direct experience).

If you're behind a NAT router, and want to see the address that the world
sees, you need to use a server-side script.

              Hope the above helps.

              regards

Thanks, Dean. I'll look into this and post any code I come up with that
                ends up working.
