No, in this context, there is no such thing as the "datagrid itself".
When working with data, you must always work with the dataProvider.
You have some other issue here. How are you creating the ArrayCollection, how are you assigning it to the dataprovider, how are you updating it in the drop event, ans how are you inspecting it?
Here is a simple example, perhaps you can see where you are going wrong.
That example uses xml, of which I am quite fond, so you will need to interpret it to compare with ArrayCollection.
Thanks for the ideas. I found the issue. I was looping over the array collection during the dragDrop event. I changed this to the dragComplete event and it worked fine. Must be a matter of timing.
