    AIR 1.0 Install Error

    uprise78
I get the following error when trying to install AIR on Vista:

"An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator."

I checked all the obvious outlets and the only info I have found so far is in the error log. MsiInstaller has the following 4 logs in this order:

"Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Adobe AIR. Product Version: 1.0.4880. Product Language: 1033. Installation success or error status: 0."
      and
"Product: Adobe AIR -- Installation completed successfully."

      then

"Product: Adobe AIR -- Removal completed successfully."
      and
"Windows Installer removed the product. Product Name: Adobe AIR. Product Version: 1.0.4880. Product Language: 1033. Removal success or error status: 0."

The AIR betas worked find for me and I uninstalled them before attempting this install.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks,
      Jon

I dug through some more forum posts and found out how to enable logging of the install using the .airinstall.log file. I logged the install and here is the result:

          Performing runtime install

          UI initialized

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have now tried installing directly from a .air file and the .airappinstall.log shows the following:

            UI SWF load is complete
            Starting app install of file:///C:/Users/mdesaro/Desktop/AIR%20iPhone.air
            UI SWF is initialized
            Converting to C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\fla98D7.tmp
            Conversion is complete
Downloading a runtime update from http://airdownload.adobe.com/air/win/add/1.0/update
            Runtime update downloaded
            Starting cleanup
            Installation exited

            .airinstall.log was:

            Performing immediate app install
            UI SWF load is complete
stateRunningAppInstaller: appinstaller -runtime "C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\AIR9F5E.tmp" -withRuntime -url file:///C:/Users/mdesaro/Desktop/AIR%20iPhone.air
App installer failed; exit code 7

            The error message was:

The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author.

The error logs indicate that the installation is failing due to a lack of disk space (MSI error 1605).

                Hi Oliver,

I checked my disk space and that does not appear to be the issue. I have over 101 GB available on my C: (install) drive.

Is that anything else it might be?

So, I tried the install again and got this in the .airinstall.log file

Sorry--gave you the wrong info for 1605. The problem here is some lingering bad state in the registry from the Beta 1 install. Try this:
                    - Open regedit
                    - Navigate to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UpgradeCodes
                    - Find the key that begins with "1F4562AA"
                    - Delete it

                    thanks,

                      Hi Oliver,

I went to HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion but I have no Installer entry in the registry. Just to be sure, I did a search for "UpgradeCodes" and only found HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\UpgradeCodes. I did find a key beginning with "1F4562AA" and deleted it but that didn't seem to work.

I appreciate your assistance on this one. Do you have any other ideas on what it might be?

OK, let's take stock of where we are:
                        - What happened when you tried the install after deleting that registry key? (Do you have the log?)
                        - Do you have an entry for AIR in the Add/Remove programs control panel?
                        - Are there any files in c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe AIR?

                          Hi Oliver,
                          - The .airinstall.log has the following:

                          UI SWF load is complete

                          - There now is an entry in Add/Remove Programs for AIR
                          - The only file in c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe AIR is called "sentinel" and it contains only the text "Adobe AIR"

                          Thanks,

OK, so your install is in a pretty funky state at this point. Here's what I'd recommend:
                            - Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe AIR directory
                            - Run the "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility" and use it to remove Adobe AIR
                            - Try a fresh install of 1.0

The cleanup utility can be downloaded from Microsoft for free. Let me know how it goes.

                            thanks,

So, I used the MS Installer Cleanup Utility to remove AIR and deleted the Program Files\Adobe AIR directory. I tried a fresh install of 1.0 and the log now shows this:

                              Performing runtime install

Not looking so good. Oddly enough, I have been using the AIR betas since the first one with no issues.

OK, it appears we didn't properly remove that upgrade GUID earlier. Are you seeing the UAC prompt during installation? If so, are you prompted to enter a user name and password for an admin account? If so, the registry edit needs to happen for the HKCU entries of *that* account.

Thanks for all your help and patience on this one. I cleared our the registry for all users and ran the MS Installer Cleanup Utility and AIR finally installed. The only remaining issue is that the only way for me to install in AIR app is to run C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe AIR\Versions\1.0\Adobe AIR Application Installer.exe and choose the .air file from there. If I double-click or right click -> Open With and use the same .exe it doesnt work and displays "Something went wrong trying to ..."

                                  Any ideas on this one?

                                  Thanks again,

Glad I could help. There are apparently issues with registration of .air files on Vista, but we're still trying to find out what this is. Could you send me:
                                    - The registry entries under HKLM/Software/Classes/.air and HKLM/Software/Classes/AIR.InstallPackage
                                    - The output of "dir /x" in the Adobe AIR\Versions directory?

Also, can you check to see if you have any entries under HKCU/Software/Classes/.air?

                                    Thanks!

I have the following under HKLM/Software/Classes/.air:

                                          [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.air]

OK, that all looks good. Please capture the .airappinstall.log file you get when double-clicking on an .air file and post that.

                                            thanks again,

The .air extensions isn't registered so when I double click I get the choose a program dialog. After choosing the Adobe Air Application Installer from the list I get the "Something went wrong trying to ..." error and there is no information in the .airappinstall.log. Blank log.

Those registry entries look correct. We're working on theories that would explain how the registry information could be correct yet file extensions could still be broken.

A few more questions for you:
                                                  - What's the output of "assoc .air" when run at the command prompt?
                                                  - Do other file extensions (e.g., .doc) work on your machine?
                                                  - Would you be willing to capture a log of what's happening (using Procmon) and send us that log file for analysis?

                                                  thanks,

The output of assoc .air is:

                                                    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0>assoc .air
                                                    .air=AIR.InstallerPackage

Other extensions work fine on my machine.

Unfortunately, running Procmon brought my system to its knees and I had to hard reboot. Ill give it a try again when I'm feeling brave.

                                                        Hi there.

It looks like you may have some orphan registry entries laying around. First, try to run the "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility" (search Google).

If it still doesn't install then capture some install logs and post them here. From a command prompt, cd to your user home directory: c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\ and type 'echo > .airinstall.log'. Also, do you have an AIR entry in Add/Remove Programs?

I'm getting exactly the same problem. I used to have AIR beta 1 installed on my Win XP SP2, and I cannot upgrade to AIR 1.0. I've tried a few techniques in this thread, and nothing works. The Add/Remove Programs has it listed, but cannot complete the uninstallation because it cannot find the file "C:\DOCUME~1\joeflash\LOCALS~1\Temp\AIR569.tmp\setup.msi".

I tried installing AIR beta 3 to see if I could upgrade from that, and that installed and uninstalled fine, but I still cannot install AIR 1.0. The Windows Install Clean Up still has "Adobe AIR 1.0 Beta 1" listed, but cannot remove it.

What I'm getting in .airinstall.log is:

You've got to create the log file before it will populate with data. To create it please go to Start -> Run... In the white box type 'cmd' without the quotes, and hit enter. In the DOS box type 'cd c:\Documents and Settings\<username>' without the quotes, where <username> is the account name for your login. Then type 'echo > .airinstall.log' without quotes. Then try to install 1.0 again, check the log, and post the contents back here.

Did you try to run the "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility"? If so, what were the results?

                                                                Then try reinstalling 1.0.

I'm running Win XP SP2.

That's the code for Beta1 on XP. The .airinstall.log you sent indicates the installer is still finding it. Also, you only had Beta1 on your system before, not Betas 2 or 3, correct?

Get the Process Monitor tool from Microsoft, start the capture, perform the install, stop the capture, and save the file with the native PML format.

Then please zip up the file and place it somewhere where I can retrieve it. You can use Adobe's Share service for this if you'd like: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/share/ . Then PM me with the location.
