Footnotes

Is there a way to put footnotes in a separate textbox on the same page? Because currently my text looks slightly odd with the footnotes at the bottom slightly squashed.

not out of the box with live footnotes.

You could look into the script Vinny is suggesting.

Or you could try that with one text frame and some shapes set with text wrap like that:

But you will run into issues if you are too creative with that:
