Don't save it, export it in a format that supports transparency, like
GIF or PNG.

quality11 Jan 7, 2009 2:10 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)The tutorial didn't mention exporting. It is a .png file. I copied the jpg image and then started new file. If so, Export or Export Wizard?
Actually, I just tried to redo the whole thing and now it won't work at all....when I click Edit > Paste inside, the roundness goes away and I'm left with the rectangle again??? Argh. -

Can you upload the PNG you are working with to your Website for me to
have a look at?

Here you go. It's usually a good idea to use a white rather than black
object to paste inside of.

7. Re: Making a photo with rounded corners
quality11 Jan 7, 2009 6:06 PM (in response to Newsgroup_User)I'm pretty sure I created a rectangle object, changed the fill color to tranparent (and the outline color), then pasted inside so not sure how the black came about. However, I'm not even able to do that anymore. What am I missing? I know this is easy. I did it easily awhile back for another site.
Thanks for fixing it. I would like to learn how you did it though. Can you tell me step by step how you created the image? I have another image I have to do the exact same thing for.
Thanks so much. -

Draw the rounded rectangle over the image, and fill the rectangle with
white. Select both the image and the rectangle and choose Modify > Mask

the mask group on a transparent canvas and export in 32 bit PNG format.

9. Re: Making a photo with rounded corners
quality11 Jan 8, 2009 4:13 AM (in response to Newsgroup_User)That worked! Thanks so much, Linda. Don't get why the directions on the other two links are different than yours. Maybe b/c I'm using version 8 they don't work?
Either way, do you have any recommendations for a newbie at FW? I would love to learn it as if I'm talking a course. I went through many of the tutorials in FW, and they're helpful, but a lot of things are missing and I still don't feel like I know anything. Including the basics.
Thanks again! -

I haven't seen the other tutorials, so I can't say if there was a
problem with them. If they were written for an early version of
Fireworks, it's a possibility. Masking has changed some in the later
versions.

Jim Babbage's book Adobe Fireworks CS4 How-Tos: 100 Essential
Techniques, is a good place to start.
