      contactHotspot_mc.onRelease = function(){
      getURL("mailto:inquiries@alamorganart.com");
      }

          That should work. Where are you putting this code? On the main timeline?
          What is the instance name of your button?

            i thought so too... the code is on the main timeline and the instance name is contactHotspot_mc. basically... i typed the word contact, turned it into a mc (contactPulse_mc) so that i could put a mouseover effect on it and then made the hot spot the functioning button. here's the full block of code for the contact button.

            contactHotspot_mc.onRollOver = function(){
            contactPulse_mc.gotoAndPlay(2);
            }
            contactHotspot_mc.onRollOut = function(){
            contactPulse_mc.gotoAndStop(1);
            }
            contactHotspot_mc.onRelease = function(){
            getURL("mailto:inquiries@alamorganart.com");
            }

            when i test it, the mouse over effects work fine but it does nothing when pressed. i'm so lost!!!

              Well, you could put this code in the button itself...

              on (release) {
              getURL("mailto:youremail@yourhost.com")
              }
