    FW8 Pop-Up Menu Validation?

    Ariel29
      I am currently using DW MX 04 and FW MX 04. I recently used Fireworks to create a navigation bar with pop-up menus, to add to a redesigned Dreamweaver site. The DW files (which are complete except for the addition of the navbar) all have the .htm extension, and they all validate to the XHTML Transitional doctype.

      But the menu bar which I created in FW MX 04, and exported for use in those files, will NOT validate to the XHTML Transitional doctype. The "menu.htm" export file had 22 validation errors. Obviously the program is showing its age, and I am considering an upgrade to the current version 8.

      But before I make that upgrade, I have to be sure FW8 can actually do what I need: export a navigation bar with pop-up menus which will validate properly to XHTML Transitional (javascripts and all!). Can anyone speak to that, one way or the other?

          Here's a good suggestion -

          Don't use the FW menus at all. There are plenty of good reasons not to do
          so, and since there are really some good alternatives that are much better
          than the ones produced by FW, it makes sense to investigate them -

          Check the uberlink and MacFly tutorials at PVII
          ( http://www.projectseven.com/)

          and the Navbar tutorial/articles at Thierry's place

            Thanks for that quick reply, Murray! I've tried out more CSS-based menus than I'd care to count, and have not been able to successfully edit any of them to meet my needs. That may simply be a reflection of my "under development" CSS skills, but the reality is that I need to get this job done.

            On the positive side, I had not visited the links you gave me, and I'll definitely check them out. I'd be nothing but happy to find a CSS approach which works for me.

            Your message has me wondering why it would be so wrong to use FW 8 for this particular task. What are the problems (or at least the worst ones) in exporting a navbar in this particular version? I already know about the problems in the MX 04 version :); I'd hoped to see some signficant improvements in this one.

            Again, thank you for your help.

              This version is improved. Unfortunately, the significant part is missing.
              You can read about the details of the FW8 menus here -

              That pretty much says it all....

                Thanks for that link; your article told me exactly what I needed to know. And that's very helpful in terms of sorting out my options.

                The pop-up menu feature is, apparently, sufficiently improved in Version 8 for me to look into an upgrade; but I don't see doing so as my logical next step. I'll be trying out the resources you directed me to yesterday, instead :).

                I would recommend your article to anyone interested in this particular feature.

                  Personally, I'd upgrade anyhow, but I would never use any of the current
                  version (or previous version) pop-up menus.

                    OK, I am working with Projectseven's CSS Express Drop-Down Menu, which is far and away the most promising approach I've seen so far.

                    But I've hit a snag. As I indicated, the navbar will ultimately go into .htm pages with the XHTML Transitional doctype. And the source code for the CSS Express menu won't validate for that doctype (I changed it to check).

                    Mostly of the problems are just XMTML tag closing syntax--which I can easily fix--but the validator also targeted this line:

                    <body onLoad="P7_ExpMenu()">

                    I know there must be another way to load that javascript so I can ultimately use this navbar (customized, of course) in my pages. But I don't know how to do it. Could you give me some "for dummies" level advice on doing that in DW?

                    I do plan to upgrade to the version 8 products, BTW.

                      Change that to this -

                      <body>

                      and change this -

                      </body>

                      to this -

                      <script type="text/javascript">P7_ExpMenu()</script>
                      </body>

                      For what it's worth, this thread should go in the PVII forums or on the DW
                      forums - but I realize it started here.

                        DW8 has a command to convert pages to any DOCTYPE. Since you don't have
                        DW8 yet, you'd have to do it manually. The differences are simple, but I
                        took the liberty of converting a page for you:

                        http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/navigation/auto_hide/strict.htm

                        We don't use xhtml doctypes, as a rule, because they don't add any
                        functionality. As DW8, and higher, gain market share, we'll likely start
                        using xhtml doctypes for our pages to conform with Dreamweaver's default
                        doctypes.

                        In essence, there really is no difference and the conversion is simple.
                        There are no issues with the actual code :-)

                          Murray and Al, I thank you both for this great assistance--you've really gone the extra mile and I am most grateful for your thoughtfulness :).

                          I'm confident that I'll be able to customize and use this navbar, and if so I will certainly credit PVII in my code.

                          Murray is correct that the thread has moved outside Adobe territory, so if I do need to follow up in any way I'll do in on the PVII site. Again, thank you!
