Cannot setup audio with Captivate 2

I am installing Captivate 2 on a Dell Precision M6300 computer.

I cannot get Captivate to recognize audio input from either a USB microphone or from the microphone in connection. Both audio inputs work perfectly with many other programs on the same computer.

Ideas on how to solve this? Would an upgrade to Captivate 3 solve the problem?

I've got a Dell Latitude D830 and Captivate 3. I gave up on trying to record
from within Captivate. I think it's the Dell. It just isn't compatible with
this functionality in Captivate. I record using Audacity and then import the
files.

I would chekc with some other people before upgrading to the next version,
if this is your only reason for upgrade.
