Remote Data Services are included with the CF 7.0.2 update. You can use CFC with Flex 2.0 without purchasing anything extra.
Take a look at the Flex Developer on Adobe. They have a simple Flex - CFC demo that shows how to use RDS and to Web Services.
I think you're referring to the Flex Data Services product. That's not a requirement for Flash Remoting (AMF3, RemoteObject, etc...). If you've got the ColdFusion 7.02 update applied, you're good to go with respect to pulling data from ColdFusion.
There is actually a free version of FDS you can download and use if you don't need the FDS enterprise features. I think it's use is limited to a single Web server, though. Maybe even a single web application - I've seen it documented both ways.
thanks for the link, i will have a look later at it...
it just seems all the adobe demos use web services or the flex data service J2ee thing..... rather than components...
Check out the latest version of the ColdFusion Devlopers Journal - they had an article that showed you how to connect to CFC's. Also, the "hello world" example on the Flex developer center here on the Adobe site.
Yes, I agree there is not much material for CFers that doesn't end up somehow referring to FDS. Maybe it's part of Adobe's marketing that product.
I have been having a hell of a time trying to implement one of the sample apps - Flexstore - using ColdFusion and an database query instead of the XML source file used in the sample app. Perhaps someone interested in the subject can look at my post at
