Where I work part-time we use Eclipse with FDT. Eclipse is free, FDT is
not... You might try ASDT instead, I think it is free, though I don't
believe it's as feature rich as FDT... I will say FDT needs work though,
it's good but it's not great by any stretch. There's also SEPY which is
free, but not nearly as popular as Eclipse with FDT or ASDT.
Personally, I think the Flash IDE is pretty good... it colors code better
than any of the external editors - they are all quite poor in that regard.
But the Flash IDE severely lacks a feature all of the external editors have,
and that is listing your class methods somewhere where you can click and
jump to them... Flash doesn't have this at all and it is totally crap -
_all_ external editors have this, Director has this... Flash needs this, and
it's my major complaint about it.
So, in short - nothing is perfect. They are all deficient in pretty major

I use FlashDevelop, from http://www.flashdevelop.org. It has quite good syntax highlighting, code hints and a method browser in a nice clean IDE. It also has a syntax checker which works with MTASC, but I never tried that. It's free, so give it a try.
