    Feedback on my site please

    respondplease
      Hello all,

I hope this is the right forum to post this, but please check out:

      www.sjcd.edu/orientation

Comments, critiques, and feedback are all welcome! Feel free to reply to this post or send me a private message (I prefer these methods rather than the "Give Us Your Feedback" option when you right click on the site.)

Also on some machines (notably macs), the site is slow and choppy. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

      Thanks

thanks for your comment. it is my first site. your site is very nice too. how do you get it to play so smoothly? are you using AS for the animation or motion tween?

Well, if thats your first site I'm feeling a little less proud of my site. :) I'm still working on a preloader so I won't post it here till I'm done. :) Nice site though, how long did it take? Did you draw/create all your own artwork? Nice job!

are you guys friends or something ? Because I can't believe you complement
                each other.
Some bad design job, no kidding :)
I mean, this is roughly standard flash site:
                http://www.thefwa.com/
Please check it out, daily new sites added. And there is about 20 over, key flash
places like that featuring about 40 to 60 new flash sites Daily for last 8 years.

People push the limit so far that comparing your work to what we all see online,
it's impossible to give any good comments, and there is no excuse for being
new. It's just not looking good and you should not be proud of it. Well you go ahead
but should not be sharing your first achievements because we are spoiled with great
looking sites, and it will only crash your spirit by reading our honest feedback.

                http://www.sjcd.edu/OnlineOrientation/orientation.html

                1. Vectors do not match with the raster images. They look way off and out of place.
It's not flawless design and look simply messy.
                2. Use way too many transparent images in place where you could use vectors. The
transparency is very poor and looks like done w/o much effort.
                3. The animation is not really related to each other. Have no idea what the site
is about, looks like bunch of random animation gathered from Internet flash resource
sites, put together w/o thinking the concept through.
Flying blurs, water ripple, jiggling icons and the background ? I would never figure
out (not just me) what is going on there and what is the site about.

WSK - I already posted feedback on your site. Is way more refine and looks way
more professional, very sophisticated and great functionality. Beside some small things
which you can fix in minutes the rest is impressive. You have been really modest
here, you way ahead of http://www.sjcd.edu/OnlineOrientation/orientation.html :)
                com'on :) can't compare.

                  Hey urami,

thanks for your honest feedback, i really do appreciate it and i'll try not to take it too personally. One reason is because i didn't do the artwork myself at all. i was given a static image and told to "make things this way and make it do that." I guess that could be a reason why my animations looks random. But regardless, the look that my senior graphic designer was going for was an edgy and ragged type of look.

If you could explain your comments "Use way too many transparent images in place where you could use vectors. The transparency is very poor and looks like done w/o much effort." - What do you mean by transparent images and how would I be able to use vector images? All images were given to me, and I actually sliced them out in Photoshop, any suggestions as to what images I can replace with vector images?

The best thing I can do for now is tweak and slightly modify this site. I'm increasing the fps so that the animation won't look so choppy and poor. The site's not going to change drastically unless my superiors give me directions. But I will keep in mind the feedback for the "next" version. Other critiques and comments are still very much appreciated.

                  Thanks again

Get rid of the "senior graphic designer". You wasting your money and time.
First of all, the colors are really bad. You do School Orientation and you have
very dull colors for it and most important of all, the graphics are totally
unrelated to the site topic. Is one big misunderstanding. Check some of these
                    ragged sites please :

UNI - just love the site, colors are great and
                    graphics done extremely well.

There is a taste, colors are in sync and images are clean even tho some of it
has the ragged look, it's still aesthetic. I can't explain to you how you see bad
and good graphics, there is no formula for it but you just know an ugly one when
you see one and in this case we can't use "personal taste can be subjective".

You have bullets holes in the list of topics while you introduce SCHOOL to potential
new student for god sake. Than there is this ugly screen with chrome like gradient
on the background that is really very ugly in colors and has no connection with the
rest whatsoever. Than there is the guys who does nothing which is made of pixels
and navigation that does not fit with the screen, or the guy or the background.
Question mark, what does it do there ? Its not a quiz, it's an information page and
I would perhaps expect "i" instead. "i" as for INFO.

The site is simply really ugly and badly made and I don't say it to make you feel bad,
I hope you can believe I'm not trying Character Assassination here :) Word.
Look at these colors for instance:
                    http://www.rothaniko.hu/eng.html
Just pleasant to look at, you don't get that vibe on your site.

                    > If you could explain your comments "Use way too many transparent images in
                    > place where you could use vectors.

All the single color images in your file could be made out of vector images in
flash. You could redraw or trace it. It would make the file half the size.
Importing png or gif is good if you deal with photos or complex gradients but not
                    something less than 256 colors.

                    > The transparency is very poor and looks like
                    > done w/o much effort." - What do you mean by transparent images and how would I
                    > be able to use vector images? All images were given to me, and I actually
                    > sliced them out in Photoshop, any suggestions as to what images I can replace
                    > with vector images?

You can redraw in flash. Flash drawing are vectors, means not composed of pixels.
Can be scale up and down w/o lost of quality.

                    > The best thing I can do for now is tweak and slightly modify this site. I'm

FPS is not an accelerator. It is a speed limiter. If the user does not have
sufficient resources, the site will suck it dry trying to keep up with your setting.
Cause it even worse performance. 31 fps is just fine, you simply need to work out
your tweens to cover less frames. Your flash seem over clocked a bit. I would say
above 50 fps because it runs too fast. I have really high end full of resources
desktop with good video card (GeForce 7950 GX2), 4GB ram and 2 raid drives (2 x 2 drives)
I don't usually do flash on it because my stuff will kill regular CPU and I won't
even realize. I use it for video editing but, there is more and more these out there
as it become really affordable and your movie will simply run so fast people can't
even see how and what is happening.

Ok, I can see where you are coming from after reading the other posts. No, not friends. :) I was just giving some support for a fellow newbie. I am by no means a site DESIGNER. :) Its a hobby, not my profession. Although I wouldn't mind it for sure. I simply meant it seemed WAY more complicated then I could do. It still may be relativley simple, but I was speaking from my experience with flash.

                      Here is my site:
                      SoundWerx

Its not complete, but its close enough that I don't mind posting the URL.
I'm also looking for HONEST opinions. Its a very simple site, partly due to my newness to flash and partly because the owner wanted it this way.

                      Thanks everyone!!
