Duplicate MC as a nested clip

I would like to duplicate sourceClip_mc not as a sibling of sourceClip_mc , but as a child so that I can use for example sourceClip_mc._alpha = 50 to change the transparency of the source MC and all its duplicates. It appears that there's no simple way to do this but I'm probably wrong! Can anyone enlighten me?

You need to use the attachMovie(). This function pulls an instance of a symbol from the library. Depending on how it is referenced it can nest movieclips into one another like below. You must have the linkage correct for this to work. You can change this by right clicking on the symbol. This example uses “source MC”.

Thanks. I knew attachMovie() would nest clips but discounted it through some muddled thinking that it needed an extra clip in the library. But as you show it only needs the source clip with appropriate export settings.
