How do you procedurally "get" an existing movieClip?

Sorry for what's probably a stupid question. I know I've seen the syntax on how to do this, I just can't find it at the moment!

What I mean is: I have a bunch of existing movieclips, on the timeline, named things like mc_1_1, mc_1_2, mc_1_3, etc.

I want to procedurally hide all of them in a loop. I can create strings like "mc_1_1", "mc_1_2", but I guess the question is, how do I turn a string into a reference to an existing MovieClip? (Using C/C++ terminology, I would say "how do I get a pointer to an existing movieClip?)

      Feeling dumb...Thanks... :-)
