    Mask problem

    sndhearn
      Hi

I am trying to use a picture of some palm trees i found on the web as a mask for a logo i'm doing. However it is not working as planned. Instead of getting a perfect outline of a palm tree on a black background the whole background goes white and i get a ghost like image of palm tree. I think it must have something to do with the edges of the palm tree image. I did manage to do it successfully once but i'm not sure how though.

Graphic design isn't really my thing so any help would be appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Simon.

you must have set the edges to feather, try using anti alias

Can you show us the Palm tree image and describe the steps you are using
            to mask?

This is the image i am using for the mask:

              http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/509062/2/istockphoto_509062_palm_tree_co uple_vector.jpg

I touched it up a little, got rid of the streaks going across it etc.

I moved them around a bit.

I created a new layer and made it black.

I cut one of the palm trees and then did "paste as mask"

I was going to try setting the edges to anti alias as suggested but i couldn't get the drop down to appear.

              Simon.

OK. You need to invert it so the trees are white and the background is
black. Remember that when you are masking, whichever part is white is
where the masked image will be 100% opaque. Wherever the mask is black,
the masked image will be 100% transparent.

I got it working. I used the marque tool instead of the magic wand and it worked nice and easily.

                  Thanks
                  Till next time.
