Newsgroup_User Jan 22, 2009 7:21 AM (in response to quality11)A few terms apply. "Mask" or "clipping path" would be the most common.
How you do it:
Use a lasso and/or magic wand tool to make a selection (outline the
woman). Choose Modify > Mask > Reveal Selection to show your selection
and hide everything else. Select the mask thumbnail in the Layers panel
and paint on it with black or white to edit the mask. That's the short
version of instructions. This task is easier in Photoshop as PS has more
tools for making selections, such as the Quick Select tool and Magnetic
Lasso. Try to Google "mask" and "fireworks" for more complete tutorials:

After they masked your example woman they just applied a simple drop shadow.
