show if conditional region based on current date compared to stored date

      I am trying to set a conditional behaviour based on current date compared to stored date - ie a date entered into a MySQL database, If the current date is before the stored date I want to be able to show a link so the user can proeed to enter information, however if the current date is after the stored dat, I don't want the link to show.

I have tried the following with no sucess:

<?php
// Show IF Conditional region1
if (@$row_rs_open_mtg['date_agenda_mtg'] <= "date()") {
?>
<?php }
// endif Conditional region1
?>

and:

<?php
if (strtotime($row_rs_open_mtg['date_agenda_mtg']) <= mktime(0,0,0)) {
// the date is earlier than today
}
?>

Anyone out there with some ideas?
