I am looking to create a PDF form that will check it's own version number against a version number supplied by our web server. If the version number on the website is higher than the file itself, the user will be told to go download the latest version of the form.
So, how do I get the version number off of the website and into the PDF file?
Just to be clear, I am not talking about the version number of the Adobe Reader, but a version number that will be defined inside the file, probably as a script variable.
A SOAP webservice would be the best way I can think of.
Just realize that any function that attempts to connect to a remote server for any reason will prompt the user to allow the connection. There is no way around that. If they choose not to allow the connection, you will not be able to retrieve the version number.
With an Acro Forms PDF and an FDF or XFDF file and extended file rights for Reader, one could have a form that could update a hidden field for the server version from an FDF or XFDF file when the desktop form is opened and prompt accordingly.
