all i can get to work is have a save as dialog box show up, i want that to show up but with the path already selected and the user only has to type in the filename
Try using an app.response dialog to get the file name from the user, and add that to the path that you want to save the document into.
There are a number of issues with using the "app.execMenue()" or "doc.saveAs()" mehtods with and without parameters and there are different security restriotions based on the version of Reader/Acrobat the target audiance is using and several ways to deal with them. So as it has been suggested, it would be best for you to download the documentation from Adobe Tech Support.
Here is a sample:
var myDoc = app.newDoc()
// layout some dynamic form fields
// connect to database, populate with data, perhaps from a database
// save the doc and/or print it; print it silently this time
// to default printer
myDoc.saveAs("/c/customer/invoices/" + row.customerID + ".pdf");
myDoc.closeDoc(true); // close the doc, no notification
