One thing that is not clear ... can I use characters such as "^p" or "^h" directly when setting my parameters, or is there a unicode equivalent that I would need to use?

Yes, you can, but without the quotation marks. This foes for ^p, ^t, and several others. You can find them in the flyout at the "Find What" field in the Find/Change dialog.

For most, if not all, special characters, ID does the conversion to proper Find notation if you copy from the text frame and then paste into the Find field.
Especially important if you move over to GREP, as that notation is in some part slightly, in other parts wildly different.
I'm trying to do something very similar. Could you please share an example of the script.
