The only other way I know to do it is to store the item in a library (can be a temp one created just for the purpose and then deleted) and place the asset from the library at the insertion point. This approach leaves the clipboard untouched.
I tried that one my self but then decided I did not want to use a library. Instead I tried placing a snippet or place the objects inside a new rectangle that is created as an inline object, but this didn't work out aether.
It seems I have to go back to the Library method :-)
