    cleaning up my styles

    kapowd Level 1
      Hello,

I am trying to clean up my stylesheets for a site I am making and I am having trouble seeing results. I have created a gang of styles that are refered to all over my html. I want to go through and clean up my code because I don't think half of the references do anything. I have a couple of questions about this process:

If I delete a class and its rules from my remote css folder and save it to the remote server, should all of the pages update? If so, when? I delete a class, refresh my site and there is still the reference to the class in the source code. Even if the class is non existant.

Is there a quick was in Dreamweaver to check and see what style is effecting what on my pagees?

I want to clean house but I feel like I am not seeing results on the live site so I am hesitant to keep screwing around.

You can see my site at www.francistannahill.com/startmeup.htm

      Any advice would be nice.

      Thanks

Huh? If you delete a class (rule) and its styles from your local CSS file,
and then upload that file, yes, all pages will reflect that. In other
          words, if I have a rule -

          .myclass { color:blue; }

and I delete that rule from my stylesheet, then that page (and any others
using that class rule) will no longer reflect that rule's effect.

Yes. That's correct. By deleting the rule from the stylesheet, you have
not deleted its use from the pages, you have simply made its effect go away.

          Find and Replace.

That's certainly alot of custom classes for such a simple page....

This may be a silly question but are you refreshing your live site?

              Hey Ace,

              Thanks again for your help.

So I have to manually remove the html from unused styles? I delete them from my stylesheet, then use find and replace to locate everywhere that class, id whatever shows up. Then I delete all them.

I should do all this locally and then push it up? If I do that will all the things that I just got rid of locally still be on the remote site?

Sorry if I am just repeating what you just told me, I just want to be sure.

And Jerry, I have been refreshing but that is not a silly question. It seems like more times than not, the answer is that simple.

Well, assuming you know what to delete, yes.

If you upload the edited files, then the edited files will be present both
                locally and remotely.

                No problem.
