Start looking at the tutorials for BlazeDS.
BlazeDS would be good since a) its free and b) you can implement data push so your clients wont have to keep polling for data. Also you can setup messaging with it. I dont have a tutorial off hand for the messaging, but this is a good start to check for setting up your environment and data push. Check it out.

if you can come up with nice user interface I will do the rest,
I am liittle bit choppy on visual appeal :D
unfortulately if you want gtalk like it requires xmpp protocol which is xml based so
