1. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Alan_Ramos) Feb 6, 2008 11:54 AM (in response to DavidB3)I am being told by the installer that my version f Acrobat has been altered and the patch can not be applied.. Er.. excuse me?! I have a copy from CS3 Design Standard and had updated to 8.1.1 using their updater.
So what's missing that I need to install, reinstall or update in order to use this? Was this even tested with more than one install of Acrobat before releasing to the public? -
2. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Corentin_Cras-Meneur) Feb 6, 2008 12:00 PM (in response to DavidB3)I'm having the same problem and no: I did not alter or disable components.
This is really really really really upsetting. It's not the first time it happens and I am more than a little tired of this :-(
Had it been the first time, I could have assumed that it was just a glitch, but 50% of the time, these updaters fail to install anything. Isn't it time to switch to a different kind of nupdaters and installer (preferably one that doesn't mess up permissions in the process)? -

(Joe_Cannon) Feb 6, 2008 12:07 PM (in response to DavidB3)Same error for me (Acrobat has been altered) but after finishing Acrobat says it is updated to 8.1.2 and if I check for updates it tells me Acrobat is up to date. Did it update or didn't it? -

6. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Corentin_Cras-Meneur) Feb 6, 2008 2:40 PM (in response to DavidB3)I decided to proceed and reinstall Acrobat 8.0.0. THe updater then accepted to update it and everything was showing 8.1.2.
Acrobat seems to be fine, but Distiller still crashes as soon as I attempt to launch it under Leopard.
Really disappointing! -

MichaelKazlow Feb 7, 2008 12:02 PM (in response to (Corentin_Cras-Meneur))Distiller crashing on launch is frequently a font problem. First toss
your font caches. If that fails, try looking for a bad font.

(Corentin_Cras-Meneur) Feb 7, 2008 2:10 PM (in response to DavidB3)> Distiller crashing on launch is frequently a font problem.
That's an interesting point.
I checked my font with FontDoctor, then made sure I had no duplicate.
I trashed all font cache through Onyx adn rebooted.
No improvement.
FontDoctor and FontBook still give me a clean bill of health (and no duplicate) and Distiller still systematically crash.
Thanks for the suggestion though, -

MichaelKazlow Feb 7, 2008 8:24 PM (in response to (Corentin_Cras-Meneur))Thats interesting. I wonder what they have in common. Virus protection?
Changes to the firewalls. Something is obviously affecting them all that
is not what most people are seeing. Do you have time to do a re-install
on one of the machines to see if it clears up.

14. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Corentin_Cras-Méneur) Feb 7, 2008 9:36 PM (in response to DavidB3)>I wonder what they have in common.
No virus protection, all running 10.5.1, Firewall enabled and only allowing authorized applications, System in English.
I did reinstall on all of the machines and it does clear out the updater issue.
What's interesting, is that, then, the updater has to update from 8.0.0 instead of 8.1.1. It therefore pulls out a different updater that's >32MB instead of the point-release updater that's only 5.5MB.
On the other hand, all the machines still have the Distiller issue despite no apparent font issue (corruption, duplicates, unsupported font or corrupted cache I cleared it).
All the machines have a fairly simple Font setup. 2 have the Office 2008 fonts, 2 have the Office 2008 ones. The rest is the fonts installed by the system and Adobe apps. -
15. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Kirsten) Feb 8, 2008 3:22 PM (in response to DavidB3)Hi David,
Did you previously run the updater as a different admin user on your system? Try the following to remove the bad updater file:
1. Select /Applications/Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional/Adobe Acrobat Professional.app
2. Ctrl+click and select "Show Package Contents"
3. Go to /Contents/Resources/AMT/
4. Delete the file AUMProduct.aup
5. Relaunch Acrobat and try updating again
Hope this helps!

(Kirsten) Feb 8, 2008 3:40 PM (in response to DavidB3)As for the "Acrobat has been altered" issue, I don't suppose the Console shows any helpful error messages? (It's located under /Applications/Utilities)
Console might show something for Distiller crashing on launch as well, I'm not sure.
Just a thought...

I reinstalled Acrobat on all the machines I had to take care of here and then properly updated to 8.1.2. I should have thought about looking in the Console, but unfortunately didn't. -
19. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
DavidB3 Feb 8, 2008 4:08 PM (in response to DavidB3)Kirsten,
Thank you for the tip.
It's possible I did run the updater as a different admin but I don't have an AMT folder or the AUMProduct.aup file. (I tried searching my drive with FileBuddy just to be sure.) Is that my problem?

(drdocument) Feb 9, 2008 2:04 PM (in response to DavidB3)I gave up and reinstalled Acrobat Pro 8 from CS3 DVD.

24. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Scott_J_Miller) Feb 12, 2008 8:12 AM (in response to DavidB3)I, too, gave up and reinstalled. An install/repair from the DVD didn't work, however -- I had to run the uninstaller in the Applications/Acrobat folder on my hard drive, then run the CS3 installer DVD to reinstall Acrobat. Then, after letting Adobe Updater download and install everything, all is now well w/Acrobat. This on a system that was very recently a clean install, with none of the CS3 installation disturbed.
Hours of troubleshooting, and then a two-hour install/download process. I'm getting a little annoyed with Adobe, especially since I'm also having the InDesign/Leopard crash randomly when using the Place/Export/Open/Save dialogs (which is not fixed by yesterday's 10.5.2 update -- and I had such high hopes).
However, it appears that uninstalling/reinstalling will fix (for now) this particular issue. -
25. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(drdocument) Feb 12, 2008 8:43 AM (in response to DavidB3)Scott,
A couple observations and questions.
In my case Acrobat 8.1.2 updater failed on my G5 (PPC, dual 1.8MHz) with Suitcase Fusion installed, but was successful on the first attempt on my MacBook Pro Core Duo (Intel), without Suitcase. Both Macs were running 10.5.1 at the time.
If you are experiencing problems with place/export/open/save with InDesign it sounds like you might have a permissions problem on your drive. Have you repaired permissions lately? Or possibly different user levels. You might find answers to those I/O problems in Apple Discussions.

26. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
DavidB3 Feb 12, 2008 10:48 AM (in response to DavidB3)Scott,
After I read your post I decided to do the same. I ran the Acrobat uninstaller and then ran the CS3 installer DVD to reinstall Acrobat. (I am using OS X 10.4.11 on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz 17".)
However, I got an Installer Alert saying, "Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium: Please insert Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit 2 to continue installation." The only DVDs in my CS3 box are Application, Content and Video Workshop.
Any idea where this ExtendScript Toolkit 2 might be? -

(Scott_J_Miller) Feb 12, 2008 12:41 PM (in response to DavidB3)drdocument: I know this isn't the thread for discussing the Place/Export/Open/Save InDesign Crash issue, but maybe others are experiencing it, too. Here's a link to the problem, with responses from a blogger on the Adobe team. It's a known Leopard compatibility issue and is effecting enough users that it's documented in the release notes for the InDesign 5.0.2 update.

29. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
DavidB3 Feb 12, 2008 1:54 PM (in response to DavidB3)Drdocument,
Yes--I see the ExtendScript on my CS3 Design Premium Application disk but when I get the alert message to insert ExtendScript and click OK, the disk is ejected and re-inserting it just brings up the same alert.
I also googled and found this link: <http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402343&sliceId=1>.
I tried Solution 1 (download and install the update to ExtendScript) but it didn't change anything, so I am now trying Solution 2 (uninstall and reinstall CS3). The initial reinstall has gone fine and I am now downloading the 540.2 MB of updaters.
By the way, for what it's worth, I hadn't mentioned before that my CS3 Design Premium is an upgrade version. -
30. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
DavidB3 Feb 12, 2008 3:07 PM (in response to DavidB3)Follow-up:
The updaters worked, including the Acrobat 8.1.2 one, which apparently took care of the bouncing Dock icon problem. The whole process, including about an hour or so trying to selectively uninstall and reinstall Acrobat, took roughly five hours total.
I'm glad I didn't have anything else to do today . . . -
31. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Kirsten) Feb 12, 2008 7:22 PM (in response to DavidB3)David,
You would only see the AMT folder and the AUMProduct.aup file after Ctrl+clicking and selecting "Show Package Contents". I don't believe it would show up in the Finder otherwise, but I'm not familiar with FileBuddy.
Deleting this file (or changing the permissions of the file to 775) will only fix the permissions issue with the updater, where the updater silently quits after downloading but before installing the 8.1.2 update if the updater was previously run by another admin user on the system. If you are receiving an error message of some kind, then you are most likely experiencing a different issue.

32. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
DavidB3 Feb 12, 2008 7:42 PM (in response to DavidB3)Kirsten,
Thanks--I appreciate your help. Now I can see the AUMProduct.aup file. I hadn't thought to look in the package contents. (By the way, File Buddy has many functions, one of which is a Find feature that I use in place of Spotlight.)
In any event, as I indicated in a previous message, I was finally able to solve the updater problem by uninstalling and reinstalling CS3, so all is finally well.

Which version of Acrobat are you trying to update? Are you on a Power PC or Intel Mac, and which version of the OS? Did you get Acrobat from CS3? What exactly is the error message that you are seeing from the updater?

DavidB3 Feb 12, 2008 10:57 PM (in response to DavidB3)Kirsten,
I made a mistake when I said I hadn't thought to look in the package contents for the AMT folder and AUMProduct.app. I did look there as you suggested but somehow they weren't there.
In any event, I got curious and tried booting my computer from a duplicate (cloned) drive, found and deleted the AUMProduct.aup file, then ran the 8.1.2 updater with no problem.

(martha_labrecque) Feb 13, 2008 9:55 AM (in response to DavidB3)I recently got a brand new mac pro with leopard and i did a fresh install of CS3 with no previous versions of adobe on my system. acrobat professional failed on launch from the first time i tried to open it (and yes, i did as it said and opened the other programs first). i ran all the updates today, from 8.0.0 to 8.1.0 to 8.1.1 now to 8.1.2, and it is still failing on launch. before i ran all the updates, i had already done an uninstall/reinstall first on just acrobat, then the entire CS3. I have not had any issues with any of the other CS3 programs, but i really only use photoshop and illustrator (and usually acrobat) on a regular basis. any ideas? -
36. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Martin_Diers) Feb 13, 2008 4:10 PM (in response to DavidB3)Ok, this is just plain stupid.
I have patched Acrobat countless times, and NEVER had an issue until now. Nothing has been modified. I have Pitstop Enfocus, and Quite Imposing Plus installed. This has NEVER been a problem before. Disabling them doesn't fix the problem.
I mean, reinstall Acrobat just to install a patch?! Are you people bloody kidding me?!
I also just tried upgrading Acrobat READER from 8.1.1 to 8.1.2. Same bloody problem as Pro!!!
Come on, Adobe! No more excuses. Fix this! -

39. Re: 8.1.2 Updater not working
(Brandon_Krigbaum) Mar 27, 2008 10:39 AM (in response to DavidB3)I can also confirm that Kirsten's fix from above solved this problem, for my Macs at least.
I had installed all applications as Administrator, so any other user accounts would fail trying to apply the update. Pain in the rear to have to go around and fix this on 40 Macs, but better than having to reinstall from scratch.
