    5.1 mixing

    therayman Community Member
When I listen back to a 5.1 mix in Premier if I have the master selected in the track list of the surround encooder I loose most of the spatial separation. It feel more like a stereo image. When I deselect the master channel my mix then reflects what I have heard in the preview. Is this how the system should operate?

I don't know. Did you ask in the Premier forum?

I should clarify that the reference is to Audition's Surround encoder mixing and has nothing to do with Premier.

Ray, in that case, it sounds as though you need to give the channels panning positioning in the surround panner. When you first open it, the surround panner has a center-dot-position for each track in which you've placed audio. You'll need to click through each one and put it where it belongs. Do this with care -- relative levels can change depending on what you select (for example, assigning to one of the channels in mono).

If you've already done that, then it may be an issue with how your sound card is set up for previewing. You'll want to look at Edit>Audio Hardware Setup and click the surround encoder tab to make sure that each of the six channels is being previewed through the correct speakers.
