My guess is that you need to download and install Camera Raw 3.7. That was the last update for Photoshop CS2. Both of your cameras were supported in earlier versions, but not in the version that shipped with Photoshop. And since you obviously had to install Photoshop on your new computer, you need to get the last version of the plug-in.
will i need the dng converter also? tried putting in the camera raw 3.7 (just dragging it to the program files) and still isn't working
No, no, no. The DNG Converter is a stand-alone executable program. You can even put it on your desktop. You would need it only if your camera model is NOT supported by ACR 3.7, which is the latest version you can use with Photoshop CS2.
In that case, you would use the DNG Converter to convert your raw images to DNG files first and then opening the DNG files in ACR 3.7.
Now, the ACR 3.7 plug-in has to be installed in the correrct location, which is where the old ACR plug-in resides. You will be replacing that old, obsolete ACR plug-in (while Photoshop is NOT running). [The default Photoshop installation comes with and installs that obsolete ACR plug-in.]
Read the instructions on the download page very carefully, and refer to the FAQs of this forum on the same page where you added this topic.
You cannot just put the Camera Raw plug-in in Program Files and expect it to work. Go back to the download page and read the instructions. The plug-in must go in precisely the folder designated or it will not work. It needs to replace the one that is in that folder now.
(windows xp/vista) plugin should be in this folder:
Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CSx\File Formats
x = 2 for CS2, 3 for CS3
