You MUST get the old version out of that subfolder. If, for some reason, you have a compelling reason to keep the old version then put it in a folder in My Documents if you are on Windows. It cannot be stored in a folder in the Adobe program path.
Personally, I see no reason to keep an older version. They are always available for download from Adobe if you ever have a need to go back. But I have never had to do that.
Photoshop searches the plug-in folder and ALL subfolders of the plug-in folder.
Thanks Jim and Thomas. I do have it in a subfolder under Plug Ins, File Formats, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats\OLD, but the file was changed to Camera Raw.OLD.
I thought we were instructed to rename the file (or) get it out of File Formats?
Anyway, I deleted the \OLD folder with the old file in it.
Now, in help about Plug Ins, I can still see two Camera Raws and for the old version it now says 'cannot be completed','Class already exists'. But, it does show the About for the 4.5 version.
Why am I getting that class exists error when looking at help, about plugins and the previous version? Elements is reading it from somewhere. Maybe it will go away on my next re-boot? I'll see when I need to re-boot again.
>I thought we were instructed to rename the file (or) get it out of File Formats?
Simple renaming is not good enough...you have to remove the old plug-in from ANY subfolder to make sure it's not loaded at launch...the instructions are lear to replace or remove the old plug-in, it never has said to rename it. There are arcane methods, using unusual leading characters to prevent a plugin from being loaded..but it's better not to dwell on that unless one really understands what's going on.
Either delete the old one or move it completely outside of the folder structure such as on the desktop.
I did-do the delete and now when I go in the help, about plug ins shows both of them again, both in the list and both their About screens.
When I immediately deleted the old one, at least I got an error trying to show the About screen on the old one (even tho it still showed both of them in the help, about plug ins listing).
Now it's back to showing both in the list and showing both their About screens.
I have not had the need to re-boot yet, so we'll still have to see About that. Pardon the pun.
You don't need to reboot, but you absolutely have to relaunch Photoshop (or Elements, as the case may be) and Bridge. As a matter of fact, Photoshop (or Elements) and Bridge cannot be running when you install, update or uninstall the ACR plug-in.
I had relaunched Elements and now, since my Lightroom (2.0) just hung on me again (if I use it for a long period of time it just stops - this time it was loading the next picture on Develop and just stayed loading for quite a few minutes), I re-booted my computer and checked Elements.
It is showing both versions in the Help, About Plugins listing and both of the help screens do show when I select them from the list.
My old .8bi file is deleted and my computer was re-booted. This was a warm re-boot, so later I will try a cold re-boot.
But, still have the problem.
>It is showing both versions in the Help, About Plugins listing and both of the help screens do show when I select them from the list.
then you still have TWO Camera Raw plug-ins somewhere in the Elements folder structure...no other way for two instances to show. You need to go through all of your folders or do a search to find where they are.
Ok, will do.

Thank you very much for that. After I searched the entire Adobe Elements folder structure there was another one in the retouche folder so I deleted that one (hope it didn't hurt retouche) and now 4.5 comes up. However, I just got an update on Lightroon (2.1) and noticed they are up to 4.6 now, so I guess 4.6 is official?
For information about Camera Raw 4.6 please go to http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6b65f
The current version of Camera Raw for Elements 6 is now 5.1.
Thanks, Thomas. I missed the reference to Elements.
Thanks, Thomas and John. I just DL'd 4.6 before I read Thomas and 5.1. But, my Lightroom is 4.6 and don't they have to be equal so I see the same adjustments and colors when I edit in PSE 6 and go back to LR 2.1? They 'infer' that the versions need to be the same in the readme. But, only infer.
4.6 and 5.1 have exactly the same rendering and camera support. The ARE the same version as far as Lightroom cares.
Oh, ok, Thomas.
Why did they make a 5.1 then?? The LR group says to use LR for workflow and organization and use CS3 or PSE for more detailed editing.
Why can't they sync their camera raws between LR and PS?
LR's camera raw is internal so I have no involvement with it.
I just went into PSE6 and verified that I was on raw 4.6 and then asked for an update through the help menu. It informed me that there are no updates.

So. Why a 5.1??
>So. Why a 5.1??
5.1 runs under CS4 and has more user interface controls than 4.6. But it has exactly the same rendering and camera support as 4.6.
Auto update for Camera Raw is not implemented for PSE users, so you will never see a Camera Raw update listed there.
