Can you be more detailed about those "two immediate messages"? What exactly do they say? Post screenshots please if you're unsure.
I am haveing a similar problem with XP. SP3
I get a Welcome screen that says:
Click next to install the following update:
Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3
Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3 - Photoshop Camera raw not installed (second line greyed out)
When I click the Next button, a window appears with a scroll bar, for a second, and the a new window replaces it that says "Done With Error - Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3 - Failed to install"
No other clues as to what is wrong.
LightRoom 5.3, Camera Raw 5.2 and Bridge 188.8.131.524 and PS CS4
I get pretty much the same thing as Dwight detailed above...
I right click the extracted Setup.exe file, run as administrator, and then see the welcome screen that reads:
"Click next to install the following update:
Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3
Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3"
The "Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3" text is repeated twice.
Click next, the installer gives a progress bar for about a second, and a new window replaces it that says:
"Done with errors
- Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3 - Failed to install.
- Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3 - Failed to install."
The "Photoshop Camera Raw 5.3 - Failed to install." appears twice in bolded red text.
I hope this helps...
Did this ever get resolved? I'm having the same problem, getting the same error message, and haven't seen any solution.
I haven't received any response from Adobe other than the first reply above. I'm not overly concerned about this problem as long as it's resolved in the final GA release.
Macintosh or Windows?
I just noticed you also post in the Lightroom forum. Do you also have Photoshop CS4?
You cannot install the ACR plug-in in Lightroom, you need to download the newest version of Lightroom, but I don't know if that has the camera support that ACR 5.3 has as of right now, as I don't use Lightroom.
I'm running CS4 and Lightroom 2.3 on a PC with XP32. Every so often Lightroom squawks when I do an "edit into cs4" and wants ACR 5.3. Except that I can't get 5.3 to install. It keeps failing with the error above. Someone in another not pointed to some installation instructions and implied there was a directory the files needed to be extracted to, but I haven't found the instructions yet...
You cannot install the ACR plug-in in Lightroom.
Both dkperez and I are unable to install the ACR 5.3 RC for Photoshop CS4. Neither of us are trying to install the plug-in within Lightroom as the ACR 5.3 RC install under Windows is a separate installation process that will not complete without the errors identified above.
When he says "Every so often Lightroom squawks when I do an "edit into cs4" and wants ACR 5.3." this means that when you are viewing a raw image under Lightroom 2.3 and want to edit it in Photoshop CS4, the Open in Photoshop command under Lightroom results in a warning message that as ACR 5.3 is not installed under PS-CS4, you must either render the raw image using Lightroom, or exit the request to edit in PS-CS4.
David, while you could be right about dkperez's post, I had not addressed yours because, to me, it sounds like you have a corrupt ACR download if it's giving you two instances of Camera Raw.

I'm running Vista 64-bit which automatically installs 2 copies of CS4 - one of each of CS4 32-bit and CS4 64-bit, hence the double install errors.
Never mind then. :/
No problem - just sort of frustrating that I can't have both ACR and Lightroom RC's working together to provide some feedback on the RC's.
I had the same install problem with the latest Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 update.
After re-installing PS-CS4 from scratch, I have now been able to install both the 11.0.1 update and the ACR 5.3 RC.
Had you by any chance moved anything from the original Photoshop install location the time before?
I can download the file on Vista 64bit for CS4 but when it begins installing, I get an error message with basically options to run installation again, try later, and quit. Does anyone know how to add the plug-in update other than through the updater?
I didn't run into this problem with my install, although in the end I did need to perform a new, clean install of CS4 in order to get the RC to work.
Once I installed the RC, it was a simple adobe updater install to install the latest GA version of ACR 5.3.
